Gracias a los avances en computación de principios de siglo, el parametricismo arquitectónico aspiraba a configurar el medio construido mediante la modelización matemática de factores físicos y conductuales. Conceptos importados de la biología como la autopoiesis permitieron concebir a la arquitectura y al urbanismo como sistemas de intercambio de información mediados por agentes. Sin embargo, la creciente conciencia sobre los cambios irreversibles sobre el planeta tierra y sus ciclos vitales, así como teorías artísticas que sitúan la producción de residuos y datos irrelevantes —clickbait, bots, spam— como el principal legado de la industrialización humana, ponen en cuestión que las aspiraciones de un urbanismo paramétrico basado en la eficiencia y transparencia de intercambios de información y flujos de capital pueda, en un futuro concebible, materializar las expectativas de instantaneidad, eficiencia y transparencia que le fueron depositadas.
